Still a Force

Reflections on aging, gratitude, and the sea
2

Took my 101-year-old mom, Mildred, out for breakfast by the harbor — such a beautiful spot right on the water. The restaurant is called The Nauti Dawg, known for its famous Bloody Mary that’s practically a meal in itself — topped with a thick strip of bacon, grilled shrimp, olives, and other goodies. Mom’s had it before, but it’s been a few years.

It is definitely hard to watch her decline. She’s always been fiercely independent, and now there are so many things she struggles to do — or simply can’t do. But she is still a force to be reckoned with, and I’m so grateful to still have her. I also feel incredibly lucky that I can be here with her now.

As I looked out at the boats, I felt that familiar longing to be back on the sea. It’s been a long time. I miss my sailing buddies. Where I am now, it’s mostly powerboats — but honestly, I’m happy to get out on any boat. I know that time will come again… and I will.

Grateful for these moments together.
