MILDRED’S MINDSET BOOK SERIES
Have a Plan (for Every Room)
Last year, I sat down with my then 100-year-old mother to write a book called MILDRED’S MINDSET: WISDOM FROM A WOMAN CENTENARIAN, filled with her tips on life and longevity. The idea came from her fans on social media—mostly on Instagram @glkirschenbaum—who kept saying they wanted Mildred’s book. Their enthusiasm was so strong that I delayed the release of my memoir, BULLIED TO BESTIES: A DAUGHTER’S JOURNEY TO FORGIVENESS, by a year so we could publish Mom’s book first.
We’ve now created a video series, with each episode sharing one of her tips. While they’re all valuable, I find this one especially important for anyone who struggles to get up after a fall.
If you fall, do you know how to get up?
Mom does—because we made a plan for each room in the house. When Mom broker her shoulder I got a physical therapist in her home to work with her. I then, realized we needed a plan. Fearless Mom was now filled with fear of failing again. Her physical therapist helped us come up with a plan it each room what she would need to do if she did fall. It already came in handy when she fell and was alone. Now, she is no longer afraid as knows what to do.
✅ Know where you can scoot on your butt
✅ Have something soft (like a pillow or towel) to cushion your knees
✅ Be near a solid object you can grab onto and pull yourself up from
Simple. Smart. Life-saving.
All these tips and so many more are in her book MILDRED’S MINDSET: Wisdom from a Woman Centenarian.
