Gratitude and Reflection: A Journey of Forgiveness and Family
A Tribute to the Bonds That Shape Our Lives
Today, as I celebrate Thanksgiving with my 101-year-old mother Mildred and my family, I'm filled with a profound sense of gratitude and reflection. Our journey together has been one of transformation, healing, and unexpected joys.
From Tension to Connection
The path my mother and I have traveled is nothing short of remarkable. What was once a relationship fraught with tension has blossomed into nearly two decades of peace and connection. This transformation began in my middle years when I embarked on a journey of healing and forgiveness—a decision that would shape my life in ways I could never have imagined.
A Story That Resonates
Our story, captured in the film "LOOK AT US NOW, MOTHER!", has touched hearts worldwide, catalyzing change and healing for countless others. This project opened doors to new opportunities, including a TED Talk and my work as a forgiveness coach, all part of a movement I call "NO MORE DRAMA WITH MAMA."
Mildred's Renaissance
In recent years, my mother has experienced a renaissance of sorts, becoming a social media sensation. Her wit and wisdom have garnered a devoted following, culminating in her book, "MILDRED'S MINDSET: WISDOM FROM A WOMAN CENTENARIAN." Available on several platforms including Amazon in various formats, it's a treasure trove of timeless life lessons.
Looking Ahead
As I approach my 70th birthday, I'm filled with excitement about sharing my own story in my upcoming memoir, "BULLIED TO BESTIES: A DAUGHTER'S JOURNEY TO FORGIVENESS." My hope is that this book will touch even more lives than our documentary.
The Secret to Longevity
Many marvel at my mother's longevity and assume it's all in the genes. While genetics play a role, they account for only about 20% of longevity. The rest comes from lifestyle choices—staying active, nurturing resilience, finding purpose, and surrounding ourselves with a supportive community.
Gratitude for Community
You, my readers and supporters, are an integral part of that community. Sharing my experiences and creativity with you brings profound meaning to my life, and knowing you're there to receive it fills my heart with joy.
The Challenges and Joys of Caregiving
Currently, much of my energy is focused on caring for my spirited centenarian mother. It's not always easy, but I cherish our time together, even as I navigate the complex emotions that come with this stage of life.
An Invitation to Gratitude
On this day of thanksgiving, I invite you to pause and express gratitude to someone you care about. Let them know how much they mean to you. The power of gratitude to heal and connect us is truly remarkable. As I sign off to help Mom prepare for our family celebration, I leave you with this thought: In the tapestry of life, it's the threads of forgiveness, gratitude, and connection that create the most beautiful patterns.
